Ed-Venturers in Action: A Four-Theme CLIL–PBL Grammar Journey with Light-Touch CALL Support
Konan University, Hirao School of Management CUBE, Nishinomiya, Japan
A question from the classroom.
A Grade 4 learning journey connects local and global content with purposeful grammar use. Four themes move from Lampang to Thailand, Asia, and environmental issues. CLIL and project-based learning form the core, while short digital games support grammar review. Learners work towards a Save Our Planet poster.

What happens when grammar learning gains context and purpose through a connected content-and-project journey?
From an idea
to a learning sequence.
CLIL input, a grammar focus, brief CALL review, and a learning output are connected across four themes. The final analysed grammar sample contains 35 learners with complete paired pre/post tests.
| Theme | Grammar focus |
|---|---|
| Lampang | Relative clauses: who, where, which |
| Thailand then and now | used to / had to |
| Asia | Comparatives and superlatives |
| Global issues | First conditional: if + present, will + verb |

What the work revealed.
- The slides report 20 of 35 learners moving to a higher grammar achievement band.
- The Low band decreased from 16 learners to 2; the High band increased from 4 to 10.
- Combined teacher observations report an overall classroom engagement mean of 3.70 on a four-point scale.
Within-group grammar results use 35 complete paired tests. Selected game logs and teacher observations describe the learning process; they do not isolate the effect of CALL.
A practical
takeaway.
Short digital review activities work within a wider learning sequence when they stay closely connected to the theme, grammar focus, and classroom product.
Paired grammar tests, observations by two teachers, selected digital game logs, and a post-programme survey. The poster is a learning product rather than a speaking assessment.
